Description:
There is a wide appreciation for the Florida Initiative by most parties -- even though there are dramatic company-by-company variations in methods of worker recruitment and retention. This presentation will discuss the need for savvy recruiting skills, working with electricians from non-union employers, working with people without English, working with new hires who may not have been trained by traditional programs; screening and assessment skills: on-site testing; formal testing; closer supervision; human relations functions; the ability to have journeymen serve as supervisors and coordinators; how to deal with workers’ shifting career ladders; new forms of instructions/directions for those who cannot read blueprints; and the views of IBEW leaders.
Speaker Bio:

Dr. Ross Koppel is the President of the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociologist, recipient of the William Foote Whyte Award for Distinguished Career in the Practice of Sociology, and the Sociological Practice Award. Koppel received his Ph.D. in 1981. He has worked on studies for the U.S. Congress' Office of Technology Assessment on the impact of technology on jobs and skill needs, and has served twice on the White House Conference on the Future of Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
